Why is what the organizers of EXPO 2022 did very ECOcool?
1 Organization
The UAE set itself the goal of organizing the “cleanest and most environmentally friendly” international exhibition in the world, and they really succeeded:
- the bulk of the electricity for the exhibition area (which is approximately 600 football fields) was produced from renewable energy sources,
- the plants that have been planted throughout the area are native species that do not require pesticides and fertilizers, and should grow in “natural” conditions,
- 90% of products, construction materials, were manufactured and packaged in an environmentally friendly manner, and entered EXPO 2022 only with the appropriate certificates,
- 85% of waste during the construction phase, during the exhibition and after it is recycled.
2 Sustainable development is one of the key topics
In the “eco” zone, all pavilions in one way or another conveyed the possibilities of sustainable development. For example,NetherlandsThey built a whole laboratory and their own climate system that collects water, energy, produces rain and grows plants. The metal sheets from which the pavilion was built were rented and will be returned to the owners, as well as all the plants that were born thanks to the temporary biotope. In the shop you could buy souvenirs made, of course, from recycled materials. It was an amazing and very responsible fusion of art, architecture and technology.
3. Responsibility of partners
Partners were also involved in the implementation of the exhibition's sustainable development concept. For example,PepsiCoreleased cans under the EXPO 2022 brand and a run of its own branded cans, which are 100% recyclable. And Mastercard have developed a donation system when purchasing tickets to the fund to combat climate change (Priceless Planet Coalition).
4 Legacy: “human-centric smart city”
After the exhibition, the EXPO site will turn into the “District 2022” area, a community of the future and a home for innovative and cultural projects. People will live and work here. Almost 80% (!!!) of the infrastructure will continue to live in a new quality.
We draw another conclusion that this trend is with us far and long, and the future of events will be firmly connected with sustainable development initiatives.
